WIP host criticizes local TV coverage of Eagles

Glen Macnow was doing some second-guessing on his radio show this week on WIP 610-AM.

However, it wasn't about the Eagles, but of fellow journalists Dave Spadaro of Eagles Digest and http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/ and Don Tollefson of Channel 29.

On Saturday afternoon's show, Macnow criticized Spadaro and Tollefson about their "softball" questioning of Eagles coach Andy Reid at his post-game press conferences without much of an argument from co-host Ray Didinger.

Macnow said: "I respect both of those guys and think they do a good job. Dave does a nice job with the Web site and Eagles Digest. I love his banter with [WIP morning host] Angelo [Cataldi] every week. And I think Don is a genuinely nice, charitable guy.

"But I think that Dave, as editor of Eagles Digest, should not be asking questions at the regular news conference. Dave has special access to Andy Reid during the week, and should ask his questions then. And Dave is, in fact, an Eagles employee. I don't believe the news conference is for Eagles employees.

"And it has become clear that Don - who has a special business relationship with Reid because of shows they've done together - tries to bail out Andy during the news conferences. The most egregious example came after the Dallas game. When reporters were trying to circle in on questions of McNabb's performance, Don - with his impressive, booming voice - broke up the questioning with some nonsensical question of how Andy felt about Quincy Carter's confidence. Andy saw the lifeline and took it.

"Who in this town really cares about Quincy Carter? And why would Don, who certainly knows what's going on at the games, shut down the questioning about McNabb by asking about Carter? I respect Don's news judgment better than to think he believed his viewers really care about Quincy Carter more than McNabb."

Spadaro, who hosts "The Andy Reid Show" on UPN-57, the halftime show during Eagles games on WYSP 94.1-FM, and does an Eagles show on WBCB 1490-AM, responded: "I'm covering the Eagles every day and have every right to ask a question whenever I want. I've been through this before. If Glen doesn't like the direction of press conferences, he should try to make his way down for one every so often."

Tollefson said: "I don't know how much of that press conference was seen on television, but as I recall, the Quincy Carter question was my third question of that press conference. Before that, I asked about the onside kick and special teams play. I'm not trying to be Helen Thomas at the White House. Those press conferences can be awkward because it is a combination of writers and broadcasters and my goal is to get a good sound bite for television.

"As for my relationship with Andy Reid, we've done many charitable endeavors, but most of my work has been with his wife, Tammy Reid. Plus, I don't do a radio show with Reid anymore."
