Mitts to put a Charge into Channel 10 sports?

Philadelphia sports insiders are saying that Heather Mitts of Philadelphia's defunct WUSA soccer team, the Charge, will be joining the sports department of WCAU (NBC10).

The world-class player with the supermodel looks (hate her) will probably anchor and report for WCAU, where her new teammates will be sports director Vai Sikahema, who recently signed a long-term contract and weekend sports anchor John Clark. Howard Eskin of "Sports Final" is a part-time employee.

According to her agent Michael Steinberg, Mitts is exploring lots of options for the future, including television, but her main goal at this time is to make the 2004 Olympic women's soccer team.

WCAU news director Chris Blackman could not be reached for comment.

Though it has been previously reported that several stations are after Mitts, Channel 10, which only has two full-time on-air sportscasters, seems like the most logical place for her to work.

KYW has three full-time sportscasters (Beasley Reece, Steve Bucci and Garry Cobb), and WPVI employs four on-air members of the sports staff (Gary Papa, Scott Palmer, Phil Andrews and Jack Brayboy).

Though Mitts has limited experience in television, it probably would be a good pickup for Channel 10, which has lost several high profile personalities within the year (Larry Mendte, John Bolaris, Kathy Orr, Karen Hepp and Lisa Mishler).

All about Soul

With the season opener of the Philadelphia Soul coming up in February, the team does not have a radio deal yet. According to team co-owner Craig Spencer (the other owner is some guy named Bon Jovi), the new Arena Football League team is in negotiations with a few stations, including WIP 610-AM and WYSP 94.1-FM, to broadcast the games. Maybe team president Ron Jaworski, who works for ESPN, could be one of the announcers?

Second team

The Fox "B" team of Dick Stockton and Daryl Johnston will call the Eagles-Giants game at 1 p.m. Sunday on Fox. Last Monday night's game scored a 29.7 rating/42 share for Channel 6. Each rating point equals 28,743 homes.

Perfect timing

Wasn't that great timing when Al Michaels was discussing how Eagles linebacker Nate Wayne always has big Monday Night Football games? On the next play Wayne made an interception.

New radio home

For the next three seasons, Trenton Thunder games will be heard on WBUD 1260-AM. Temple University graduate Dan Loney will enter his fourth season as the play-by-play man for the New York Yankees' Double-A team.

Funny guy

WIP 610-AM overnight host Big Daddy Graham will perform his comedy routine at the Comedy Cabaret in Doylestown tomorrow night at 9:45. Call 215-345-JOKE to make reservations.
