named permanent host on WIP Steve Martorano has returned for his second tour of duty with WIP 610-AM. The radio veteran, who had been working part-time for the station since last summer, was named the permanent 10 a.m.-3 p.m. co-host with Anthony Gargano. Many listeners remember Martorano from the "Infotainment" days of WIP, after its AM heyday and before it became an all-sports station in the mid-'80s. However, when WIP transitioned into all-sports, Martorano left the station because "I didn't think it would work. If I had to make a living predicting the future, I'd die." Even though then-WIP general manager Tom Brookshier begged him to stay, Martorano moved to Boston, where he worked for two radio stations for the next five years. Many listeners also remember the South Jersey native from his days as a disc jockey for WDAS-FM and WMMR-FM in the mid-'70s. "I played classic rock when it was new," he joked. Martorano also worked in management as the operations manager at WMMR, but returned to the airwaves on WPHT 1210-AM before "I was blown out by Rush Limbaugh." This true radio guy is thrilled to be back at WIP. "WIP is Philly's radio station. The impact of this station is unbelievable. Everybody listens to WIP. I can't wait until Eagles season starts," said Martorano who attended the NFL championship game with his father at Franklin Field in 1960. Besides his full-time job at WIP, Martorano hosts the restaurant review show called "The Review" on CN8. Right now his plate is full at WIP. Tennis, anyone? Breakfast at Wimbledon airs for the 25th consecutive year on NBC tomorrow and Sunday at 9 a.m. The announcers will be Ted Robinson, Mary Carillo, John McEnroe, Bud Collins and Jimmy Roberts. I miss longtime Wimbledon announcer Dick Enberg, who is now with CBS. Quick move Speaking of tennis, it took Rich Eisen about three seconds to find a new job after not coming to terms with ESPN. Eisen will host the U.S. Open for CBS in late August. It's a girl Congratulations to CN8 sports reporter Bruce Casella and his wife, Jenny, who welcomed daughter Jenna Marie on June 27. She joins big sister Sarah, who will turn 4 in September. Lame awards show news The second Annual "Dammies" will air on "The Best Damn Sports Show Period" tonight on Fox Sports Net. The wacky awards include categories such as "Best Damn Shameless Promotion" and "Best Damn Argument." I guess they won't be doing "Best Damn Lawsuit," as a former hairstylist filed a sexual harassment suit against the show recently. ESPN's salute to itself, "The ESPYs" airs July 16.
