Surfing by Laura Nachman Bucks County Courier Times June 1, 2004 Despite a May sweeps fourth place finish for ABC, WPVI held on to win the 11 p.m. Monday through Friday news race with an 11 rating/18 share. WCAU finished with a 10 rating/16 share, and KYW was a close third with a 9 rating/15 share. This is KYW's best May sweeps performance in almost a decade. At 4 p.m., "Oprah" continues to rule for WPVI with a 10 rating/21 share. ("Oprah" has been good this month - I've watched a few of the celebrity-oriented episodes.) The WCAU news had a 4 rating/10 share and "Judge Judy" on WTXF had a 4 rating/8 share. The KYW news finished fourth with a 3 rating/6 share. At 5 p.m., the WPVI news, which will now permanently be co-anchored by Rick Williams and Monica Malpass, since it was announced last week that ailing Lisa Thomas-Laury won't return, led with a 9 rating/19 share. "Dr. Phil" was next with a 7 rating/14 share, and WCAU's news dropped to third with a 5 rating/10 share. At 6 p.m., WPVI continues to have more than the combined ratings of WCAU and KYW. WPVI led with an 11 rating/21 share. KYW moved into second place with a 6 rating/11 share and WCAU was in third with a 5 rating/10 share. The ratings should be satisfying for KYW 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. news anchor Larry Mendte, who this time last year was taken off the May sweeps by former station WCAU. Mendte moved to KYW in September and is now beating his former station at 6 p.m. and is only a rating point behind WCAU at 11 p.m. In an email, Mendte wrote, "The news CBS3 has been around for less than a year and I am so proud of the success of the news operation. I would not be surprised at all if we are #1 at 11 in the fall. That seems to be the way things are heading." Also, at 10 p.m. WTXF had a 6 rating/8 share. WPHL had a 2 rating/3 share. Each rating point equals 28,743 households. Ratings were rounded off to the nearest number. Congratulations to Siafa Lewis of Philadelphia, who won WCAU's "Greatest Summer Gig Ever" contest. Lewis will do weekend shore traffic reports for the station this summer. Congratulations to WPVI weekend weather anchor Sally Ann Mosey, who is expecting her fourth child in the fall.
