Surfing by Laura Nachman Bucks County Courier Times December 23, 2003 In a recent announcement to the WPHL newsroom, it was revealed that the WPHL weekday 10 p.m. news will be cut back to a half hour beginning December 29. Reasons stated were a lack of sufficient resources to mount a competitive hour-long newscast and the success of the previous half-hour long show. The 10 p.m. newscast anchored by Mike Dardis and Toni Yates, ranked fifth out of the five broadcast stations in the late night November ratings period. The departures continue at 17. According to a newsroom source, weekday weather anchor Steve MacLaughlin's contract won't be renewed at the end of the month. Kirk Clyatt, who already is filling in for previously departed weekend weather anchor Tracey Humphrey will get more work as the weekday substitute. Viewers may remember Clyatt as a fill-in at Channel 10 earlier this year. Also, the Sunday night sports show, "Sports Extra" will discontinue. Jeff Katz is leaving WPHT 1210-AM at the end of the year. Katz, who most recently had the 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. shift joined "The Big Talker" a couple of years ago to do afternoon drive, but his hours were drastically cut when Michael Smerconish was brought back to the station. When Smerconish went to mornings, syndicated host Sean Hannity got the coveted afternoon hours instead of Katz. The revamped WPHT lineup will give Dom Giordano the 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. shift, followed by Bill O'Reilly from 9 p.m. - 11 p.m. and Rollye James from 11 p.m. - 2 a.m. Can You Believe It? Moriarty Leaves KYW After Almost 20 Years Consumer Reporter Paul Moriarty's time has expired with KYW. Moriarty, known for his "Can You Believe It" reports will leave the station at the end of the month after 17-years on the job. Before Moriarty joined KYW, he was the producer for Herb Dennenberg's segments on WCAU. This year's Mummer's parade will be on WPHL for the tenth consecutive year. Coverage begins New Years' Day at 9:30 a.m. Toni Yates and Steve Highsmith will host. When WCAU meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz pinch-hit for ailing Vai Sikahema last week on the sports, it wasn't as much as a stretch as viewers would think. Schwartz is a huge sports fan who worked as a vendor at Franklin Field in the 60's so he could attend Eagles games, played "charge" on his bugle at Phillies games (why is that not surprising), and watched Warriors games with Wilt Chamberlain at Convention Hall. Today he has season tickets for weekend games for the Sixers and Phillies. Maybe he should change his name from "Hurricane" to "Glenn-bo." WCAU weather anchor Doug Kammerer and former beauty pageant winner (Miss Teen USA and Miss Indiana) Holly Roehl got married last Saturday. They honeymooned in Jamaica. Former Philadelphia radio and television personality and Washington Crossing native John Ziegler has just been hired to do an evening talk show with KFI-AM radio in Los Angeles, CA. Ziegler was fired this summer from his top rated talk show in Louisville, KY for allegedly making inappropriate on-air comments about a local TV personality whom he dated there. In Philadelphia, Ziegler did time at CN8, WIP 610-AM, and WPHT-1210-AM. Ziegler begins his latest job on January 12th. Former "Good Day Philadelphia" host Dave Price who is the weatherman for the "CBS Early Show" was on Viacom-owned "Hollywood Squares" last week. I also caught him in action on "The Early Show" the day after the "Survivor" finale, since the only time I watch that show is after the "Survivor" finale. "Ivana Be on TV" Heidi Bressler, 30, a senior account executive at Qwest Communications in Philadelphia will be one of the 16-contestants vying to be "The Apprentice" of Donald Trump. The reality show debuts on NBC January 8 at 8:30 p.m. WYSP 94.1-FM gave Tommy Conwell an early Christmas present. The former leader of the popular local band "Tommy Conwell and The Young Rumblers" won the open audition for the mid-day slot. Conwell's best-known song was "I'm Not Your Man." It looks like he can say "I'm Your Man" for WYSP. Here were some of the suggestions submitted by readers for musical artists that deserve a tribute show: Elton John, Barry Manilow, Tony Bennett, The Rolling Stones, Santana, Eric Clapton, Barbra Streisand, Tom Petty, Kenny G., and Perry Como. WBCB 1490-AM morning man Jim Foxwell, who is a huge Johnny Cash fan suggested "The Man in Black." Give that man a show! |
