| ON THE AIR Best and worst of the Winter Olympics
The 2002 Winter Olympics will
be remembered for the ice skating scandal, the introduction of extreme
sports to the games, and incessant "Watching Ellie" promos.
Here are some other observations from the 17-day event:
Best on-air team: Gary Thorne and John Davidson.
Worst on-air team: Bob Costas and Jim McKay.
Worst perm: Tom Hammond.
Most likely to win an endorsement from Gillette: Apolo Anton
Ohno.
Most likely to end up on "Jerry Springer": Those
feuding U.S. women bobsledders.
Most likely to end up guest starring on "Reba":
Sarah Hughes.
Best newcomers: Sandra Bezic and Jimmy Roberts.
Out of their element: Mary Carillo and Dan Hicks forced to
make comments about Kiss and Harry Connick Jr. during the closing
ceremony.
Benedict Arnold Award: American Janet Jones, wife of Wayne
Gretzky, rooting like crazy for Canada in the men's ice hockey final.
No Canada: Our northern neighbors beat us in men's and women's
ice hockey, plus Celine Dion is moving to the United States to do 200
shows a year in a Las Vegas casino. Enough is enough.
Most disturbing sight: The giant dinosaur heads during the
closing ceremony.
Second most disturbing sight: The red thing Katie Couric wore
during the opening ceremony.
French hero: The ice skater in the Coke commercials.
French villain: That mean figure skating judge.
Most welcome comeback: After a shaky start, Jim McKay and
Dorothy Hamill.
Least welcome comeback: Donny and Marie Osmond.
Best home video: Sarah Hughes wishing for a gold medal as a
tike.
Best nicknames: Jennifer "Miami Ice" Rodriguez and
"Skategate."
Worst nickname: Jonny Moseley's "Dinner Roll."
Dynamic duos:Sale and Pelletier and Bakken and Flowers.
Worst combination: Kristi Yamaguchi, Katarina Witt and Kiss.
Say what?: The snowboarding commentators. I don't know if they
were good or not, because I had no idea what they were talking about.
Flyers count: Former Flyers center Bill Clement was a men's
ice hockey analyst; former coach Pat Quinn coached the gold-medal
winning Canadian men; current Flyer Simon Gagne and former Flyer Eric
Lindros were members of Team Canada; and current Flyers Jeremy Roenick
and John LeClair played for Team USA.
