Since it is the end of the school year, here is a report card for the local stations.

WPVI

Outstanding - Rick and Monica (they don't need last names and if anyone but them gets the 5 p.m. timeslot, it would be a crime), Jim Gardner, Dave Roberts (for producing a very cool son), and wacky Michele McCormack.

Satisfactory - Commerce bank time and temperature

Most courageous - Gary Papa, who continues to work while undergoing treatment for prostate cancer

Summer Assignment - Find something for Wally Kennedy to do, since he'll be out of a show when "Good Morning America" begins on the weekend in the fall.

WCAU

Outstanding - Sportscasters Vai Sikahema and John Clark, "Sports Final" (maybe sports isn't dead).

Needs improvement - "10" gets tied or beaten in the ratings by "Jerry Springer" and "Guiding Light."  Get it out of the Loews, bring it back to the Channel 10 studio, get a studio audience, and create excitement.

Incomplete - Soccer player Heather Mitts' days at the station ended almost as soon as they began.

Unsatisfactory - The internet pedophile story in the Newtown Square home infuriated a community and created lots of bad publicity.  Beth McDonough and Ted Greenberg got suspended for getting a story wrong.

Summer Assignment - Stop the bleeding from "Dr. Phil" at 5 p.m.

KYW

Outstanding - Larry Mendte jumps ship from WCAU to help KYW to its highest ratings at 11 in almost a decade.  Kathy Orr has flourished as the number one weather person at her station.

Satisfactory - Traffic reporter Bob Kelly has managed to create a niche for himself in a position that didn't exist a couple of years ago.  I wouldn't be surprised if KYW finds a way to create traffic at 11 p.m. to get him on the late show.

Most courageous - Carol Erickson's battle with breast cancer was documented on the air.

Unsatisfactory - Though it hooked lots of viewers, many industry watchers were critical of the Alycia Lane/Dr. Phil "sweeps" interviews.

WTXF
Outstanding - "Good Day Philadelphia" has improved 50% in the ratings because it finally got a permanent team - George Mallet, Jennaphr Frederick, and Kerri Lee Halkett.  Halkett also gets high grades for her fill-in role on the "10 O'clock News."

Unsatisfactory - Dubbing itself "The Official Winter Weather Station."

WPHL
Satisfactory - Toni Yates, Steve Highsmith

Needs Improvement - Everything else
